Laser cutting — common questions
Vector or raster — what file do I send?
Cutting needs a true vector file (SVG, AI, DXF or a PDF built from vectors) at real-world size, with cut lines on a separate layer or colour from engrave lines. Engraving-only jobs can also work from a high-resolution raster image — ask the maker which they prefer for your job.
What can be laser cut vs. only engraved?
Thin acrylic, plywood, MDF, paper/card, leather and thin fabric can usually be cut through. Metal needs a fibre laser (not every workshop has one) and is often marked/engraved rather than cut unless the sheet is thin. Glass, stone and ceramic are typically engraved/etched, not cut.
Can I supply my own material?
Often, yes — mention it in your brief and ask about size limits and any material types the workshop won't run (e.g. PVC, which releases chlorine gas when lasered, or unknown foams).
How fast can a laser job turn around?
